On April 6, 1994 the Rwandan Genocide started and lasted approximately one hundred days. In Rwanda there are three ethnic groups: Hutu (85%), Tutsi (14%), and Twa (1%). The Tutsi population was targeted by the Hutus because a Tutsi soldier shot down the Hutu's president's plane.
Causes
- The Belgian colonial rule, which rewarded Tutsi with a Western education, denied political and economic power to the Hutus.
- Rwandas Independence, in 1963, when the Tutsi were discriminated against, and went into exile in Uganda.
- The Civil War, when the Tutsi returned to Rwanda in 1990, a civil war broke out, ending in a cease-fire, signed by the Hutu president, and presided over by the United Nations peacekeeping force.
- President Habyariman, a Hutu, was shot down on April 6, 1994. The Hutus blamed the Tutsi for this and they started a massacre because of it.
